GPUs are sitting on loading docks at data centers that cannot install them because there is no power available. Servers are being shipped without memory because memory supply cannot keep pace. Data centers that appear on corporate roadmaps are, in many cases, little more than options on undeveloped land.

The ROI Reckoning May Not Arrive Until 2027

The Next Bottleneck: Power and Connectivity
Looking ahead, two infrastructure constraints stand out as the next major bottlenecks — and, correspondingly, the next major investment opportunities.
Fiber optics in the data center. The evolution mirrors what happened in residential broadband. Just as copper networks gave way to fiber for higher data throughput in homes, data centers are now undergoing the same transition. Copper interconnects are being replaced by optical solutions that offer dramatically higher bandwidth and, critically, do not carry the same electrical power overhead. This shift addresses both the throughput constraints and part of the energy problem simultaneously.
Silicon carbide semiconductors. Next-generation GPU architectures, such as Nvidia's Rubin platform, operate at different voltage levels that are more power-efficient but require a different semiconductor substrate — silicon carbide. This material enables the higher voltage operation that new chip designs demand, opening up opportunities on the wafer manufacturing side for companies positioned in this niche.
